How to read this chart

  • Find the age on the bottom axis and the height on the left axis; where they meet is the plotted point.
  • Curves P3–P97 are percentiles. A point on P25 means taller than about 25% of girls that age in the reference.
  • The bold P50 curve is the median — half of the reference population falls above it, half below.
  • Tracking matters most: a child following their own curve steadily over time is the reassuring pattern, wherever that curve sits.

About the two references

The CDC tab shows stature-for-age for ages 2–20, the reference used across the US. The WHO tab shows length/height-for-age from birth to 5 years — recumbent length under 24 months, standing height from 24 months — the international standard. Curves stop exactly where each reference's published tables stop; we never extend them.

How do I read the percentile curves?

Each curve (P3 to P97) traces one percentile across ages. Find the child's age on the bottom axis, go up to their height, and see which curve the point sits on or between — that is their approximate percentile. The bold emerald P50 curve is the median.

Which chart should I look at — CDC or WHO?

The CDC tab covers ages 2–20 (standing height, the US reference); the WHO tab covers birth–5 years (length lying down under 2, standing height from 2). Use the tab that matches the child's age and the reference your pediatrician uses.

Are these the real published curves?

Yes. Every curve is computed from the official published LMS tables — CDC 2000 stature-for-age and the WHO Child Growth Standards — with the same inverse-LMS transform the charts are built from. Nothing is smoothed, estimated, or drawn by hand.

What does it mean if the plotted point is far from the middle?

Being near P3 or P97 just means the measurement is uncommon in the reference population — it is not a diagnosis. What matters most is whether a child tracks along their own curve over time. This chart is educational; discuss concerns with a pediatrician.
